GP Referral Policy (v.1.0)

This policy outlines the terms under which I accept referrals from GPs and other healthcare professionals.  It is designed to ensure clarity, appropriate referral practices, and ethical collaboration.

1.Purpose of Referral
Referrals are welcome for adult clients (18+) who may benefit from private psychotherapy, particularly neurodivergent clients seeking tailored, affirming support. My practice is independent of the NHS and offers in-person sessions in Guisborough or online via Zoom.

2. Client Consent
GPs must confirm that the referred client has given explicit, informed consent for:
>Their personal details to be shared with me

>You (the GP) to make a referral on their behalf

>You to book an appointment with me on their behalf (if applicable)

I will not contact any referred client unless this consent is confirmed (please confirm this on the booking form).

3. Scope of Practice
I am a BACP-registered psychotherapist with over a decade of experience.
I do not provide diagnosis, medical advice, or reports for legal, benefits, or employment purposes unless separately agreed.
I am not a crisis service, and referrals involving high risk or urgent need should be directed to NHS mental health services.

4. Communication with GPs
With the client’s written or verbal consent, I may provide brief updates on engagement or progress. This will not include detailed clinical content unless specifically agreed.
I do not share any client information without consent, except in circumstances where I have a legal or ethical duty (e.g. serious risk to life or safety).

5. Data Protection
All information submitted through the GP referral form is handled in accordance with GDPR. Information is stored securely, accessed only by me, and used solely for the purposes of arranging and providing therapy.

6. Responsibilities
The GP remains responsible for medical care, emergency support, and any necessary prescribing. I will liaise with you where appropriate, with the client’s consent, to support joined-up care.
If you have any questions about this policy or would like to discuss a referral informally, please feel free to contact me.
